Apartment Tour in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic | What’s the Cost of Living? [CC]

How should I start? “HI”…. not like that? Ok. I can’t stop
looking at you. I rent a furnished apartment here in
Santiago which is as I said before the second biggest city in the Dominican
Republic and I just wanted to show it to you. I chose this one because of the location.
it’s in a really safe night neighborhood and it’s next to my boyfriend. Disclaimer: I was going to clean before
making this video but then I decided that wouldn’t really be authentic to my
actual living experience so it is as it is. Okay so right when you come in we have someone you may recognize- the owners of
my apartment our classy AF. So I have a spare bathroom in here that I don’t
really use. Dining room… oh this guy, check him out he
is amazing. I don’t know who that is I don’t know if it’s like the grandparent
like the grandfather of the family who lived here or if it’s just a Dominican
man. And that’s pretty like an accurate representation here lots of like hanging
outside in the rocking chair, shirt not mandatory . So he you know watches me
while I cook. Um out here I have a space I’m not gonna go out there because the
guys who came to set up my Wi-Fi destroyed this. They like just ripped that
out of the wall, now the doors pretty hard to open
but I have like this whole from the length of my apartment outside to the
back of the building. and now I’m going to show you my kitchen…china cabinet I
will never use anything in there. This is my kitchen, this stove is for show so um
I was instructed that that we can’t use that stove which is alright it’s fancy
it looks nice but what I usually use more is this guy the George Foreman. I
did not know how many things you could do with that. um like I said I was going
to clean and do my dishes but it didn’t happen, uh this what all guys the
Dominican coffee maker just pretty good I don’t know actually why we don’t use this inn
the states it works well. And then something also to note- you can’t drink the water
here so anything from the tap or the shower is really contaminated if you
drink it you’ll get sick so you don’t even really like wash any fruit or
vegetables or anything that you’re going to consume with the tap water. So you
need to buy these these are like a dollar each-actually they’re less than a
dollar-and I get them right across the street at the colmado, they bring it
over and that lasts me for a little bit at least so that’s like purified water.
This is traditionally a service room so a lot of dominican families will have
like someonne e to help cook or clean and they would either like sleep in this
area…pretty much like sleep in this area in this case it’s the washing area and
this is the stove that I can use and then back here is a another bathroom but
as you can see it’s being used as like a cleaning storage room. Alright first
bedroom that’s my laundry, we have another nice little Dominican painting,
there a crib for I don’t know if anyone wants to come visit me that has kids
there’s a crib. And this is the room I I sleep in it’s
pretty simple basic I did my best making the bed… I’m sorry mom, and then the
bathroom this is the one that I use pretty standard. Now I know if like an
interesting think this is funny this is the master bedroom right here but I
don’t get to use it it’s closed, like locked. So the people who own my apartment they live
in Miami so I think that they’re just like kind of using this as a storage
room I have never even been in this room, I don’t
know what’s in it like I hope just boxes and like a master bedroom bed and
bathroom but hopefully I don’t know sometime we hear noises that I’m like I
hope I’m not like an accessory to a crime that’s happening in there because…
clueless. So it’s kind of weird like master bedroom I don’t have access to
but sorry I’m just curious you know like what’s going on in there but one day
I’ll find out… maybe. That’s pretty much it that is my
apartment like I said it’s definitely the nicest one that I’ve lived in so far
while being here.. um it’s safer, quieter, no like chickens and cows and there are
motorcycles and loud cars outside but nothing like my opens house was it’s
been really good so far I like that it’s furnished and like furnished. I was
looking at a bunch of apartments that say furnish in the advertisement and
then it has like one chair like stovetop like one burner and one army cot. I guess
this is like pretty typical of apartments in Santiago some are more
modern some less if you’re wondering what I pay for rent I pay 400 a month US
Dollars and I know that doesn’t sound like a lot if you’re
living in the US but for here.. I seriously paid under $100 for rent in
the other two houses and that they were you know big houses same if not bigger
size than this and every room was open so for me it was more expensive but
since I’m working remotely online and getting paid in US dollars it’s okay for
me but I think for a family living here or a person living here if they were
getting paid on a Dominican salary and didn’t have other people to contribute
to rent then that might be a little bit harder. I pay about $25-30 month for electricity so not bad. Thanks for watching if you liked it

  1. Loved the video. That appartment is huge and it's really nice. Good information on how much it cost to rent. Thank you

  2. You could’ve rented my apartment and have access to the full place plus a pool and rooftop terrace in santiago 5 minutes from the airport. Good luck in santiago, enjoy my beautiful city!

  3. Just watched you on another expat video. Thanks for sharing your experience and adventure living in DR . You're a joy to! I'm retiring and trying to decide where I can live better on 2100 a month

  4. Awesome video. Have very similar situation but my parents are from the D.R. Trying to convince my fiancée to move there someday. Santiago is an awesome city I always stay there when I visit and we live in NY so very similar situation lol. On the master room note. Dominicans basically don’t trust people so they lock the master with their personal belongings and jewelry so they don’t have to pack as much when they travel. Good luck living out there. If you need any guidance or suggestions about the area let me know i can definitely help. I know the city like the palm of my hand.

  5. Good video. My in-laws pay $200 for a 3br villa in Santiago. For $400 you can get a penthouse. Looking to move there next year. Have not decided on a city yet, but I need the beach.

  6. Great video..planning to move to Santiago in the next year. Santiago is my favorite city of the whole island.

  7. Santiago es muy bonita, pero en la Capital, Sto Dgo, se hacen los cheques..$$$only Dominicans know what a said!😀😀😀

  8. Im glad you find a nice place to leave, don't worry about the master bedroom is very common for people to leave they master bedroom lock is like they little sanctuary.

  9. Hi, the more I think about your locked room, the more I think that you're putting yourself in some legal jeopardy…. I don't know if I could live there with knowing what is in the room, that has to be kept locked. 🤔

  10. Hello there!!
I just watched your video and found it very interesting. I'm planning on retiring at the end of the year and the Dominican is one of my favorite options!!
How can I get a hold of you so you perhaps can give an estimate on how much I'd need monthly to live in a very nice area in Santiago for a one bedroom (furnished) it will be only me and I plan on going out socially (dinner, maybe a bar every now and then, let's say once a week)
Bearing in mind that I'm very conscious about my expenses. Maybe you can talk me into something nice. My email is [email protected]
I hope to hear from you soon🤗🤗🤗
    Thank you Becky…

  11. IM sorry but youre wrong with the thing that you cant clean fruits with the tap water you can without getting sick the thing is you shouldnt drink it straight up but you can do everything else with it.

  12. Is the 2 prices one Dominicans and another price for gringos In apartments or eateries..? In the DR.. There is a guy on YouTube promoting anti Dominican stuff while living in the Dominican. So please let me know about prices

  13. Hi You’re better off buying an apartment for yourself and paying off with the same amount are you paying for rent and have it as an investment and you would have your own master bedroom and your own stove take care philip bobbio

  14. The guy in the rocking chair and the locked master bedroom is creepy for me. I Hope the guy in the chair didn't died in the master bedroom and he's spirit still around, I will run out the door if I hear something at night. Check out the alli patio, make sure there is not a door outside the master and is not being rent as a motel. 👍😁

  15. hey i would love to know how you do that work remotely thing , i currectly live here i have a social and all i just dont know the correct steps to make that work
